Solar FAQ — short answers, no salesman script

You came looking for a number or a catch. These are the questions people ask before they run Helio or after they leave with a ballpark. If you want depth on bills and pay paths, see How solar saves money. If you want the cost framing, start at How much does solar cost?.

How much does solar actually cost?

There is no honest national sticker price. Cost follows system size; size follows the kilowatt-hours on your bill and what fits on your roof. Helio gives a ballpark from that — not a bid. A real quote comes after a site survey. Walk through the framing on How much does solar cost?, then run the free calculator.

Is Helio’s solar calculator really free?

Yes. Enter your bill (or usage), see a system size and a cost range, compare cash / loan / lease shapes. No charge to use the tool. Contacting a Helio Verified installer is optional and only happens after you have a design — see Helio Verified.

How does Helio size a system from my electric bill?

You give monthly kWh or a dollar amount plus context Helio can use. The tool aims for an array that offsets a meaningful share of that load, then checks roof constraints. A Phoenix cooling bill and a Maine winter bill are not the same job — square footage alone is a bad proxy. Start at the calculator.

Should I pay cash, take a loan, or lease?

Cash: you own it day one; highest lifetime value if you have the capital and plan to stay. Solar loan: you still own it; a lender floats the install; payment is usually designed to sit near the old bill. Lease or PPA: a company owns the hardware; simpler entry, usually smaller lifetime savings. Helio’s pay-path views are illustrative — compare shapes, then confirm terms with the installer. More on How solar saves money. Helio does not quote federal tax-credit amounts.

Do I need batteries for outages?

Grid-tied panels shut off when the grid drops — they are not a generator. A battery holds some daytime production for evening and outages. It adds cost; it does not make more sun. If backup matters, that is a storage conversation, not more modules. See backup power / batteries.

What if my roof is old or needs work soon?

Mounting solar on a roof that will need replacement in a few years often means paying twice — once to install, again to remove and reinstall. Many homeowners reroof first when the roof is near end of life. Helio cannot inspect your shingles; a good installer will. Ask before you sign.

How does net metering affect my bill?

Under net metering, extra kilowatt-hours you send to the grid usually show up as bill credits. What those credits are worth — and how long they last — varies by utility and state. Helio does not invent a national credit rate. Check your utility’s rules, or skim the state hubs for the policy shape where you live, then confirm with the installer.

How do I choose a solar installer without getting played?

Design before sales pitch. Check license, insurance, and local track record. Compare quotes on equipment, warranty, and what is included — not just the headline monthly payment. Helio’s longer walkthrough is How to choose a solar installer. When you are ready for humans, start with local installers after a full Helio design.

What does Helio Verified mean?

Helio is a free calculator, not a lead mill. Helio Verified companies are the only ones you can contact through this site — and only after a full design with real information. No purchased lists. No spam blast. Read Helio Verified.

How long does a residential solar install take?

Timelines vary by permit office, utility interconnection, roof complexity, and crew schedule. Many jobs move from signed proposal to turn-on over weeks to a few months — treat that as a range, not a promise. Your installer should give a local schedule, not a national average.

Does solar increase home value?

It can help when you own the system and buyers see lower bills — especially if documentation and warranties transfer cleanly. Leases and PPAs complicate resale for some buyers. Helio will not invent a national “X% home-value lift.” Ask a local agent and your installer what buyers in your market actually care about.

Can I start without talking to a salesperson?

Yes. That is the point. Run the free calculator, leave with size and ballpark, then decide whether to contact anyone. If you do, it is after homework — through Helio Verified companies via installers, not a cold lead list.
